Roll with it

02Mar10

Roller derby is the big new thing, if you’re hardcore enough. The sport originated in the US but there’s a London Roller Girl league – check out the video above featuring some inspiring, tough, tattooed women. The vague aim is to shove opposing players off the track, and it looks unbelievably fun. League organisers stress roller derby is for all types of women – just as long as you don’t mind falling over. A lot.

The added creative dimension of pun-heavy team and tag names is represented beautifully in Drew Barrymore’s upcoming directing debut Whip it!, a roller derby extravaganza featuring Juno’s Ellen Page. Iron Maven, Smashley Simpson and Babe Ruthless in the Hurl Scouts? Oh yes. I wish I had known about this kind of world when I was a teenager. A perfect way to teach girls a different way to be girls.
